Rutgers Football Updates

Rutgers University, once again, will thrill football fans as the 2018 season is underway. The Scarlet Knights are one of the favored teams in New Jersey and playing home games at High Point Solutions Stadium, they will compete in the East Division of the Big Ten Conference. For the third year in a row, the team will be led by Chris Ash, the head coach. The team has a decent 2017 season, finishing fifth in the East Division. During the offseason, the Rutgers team signed 21 new recruits, so there will be plenty of fresh blood on the field this year.

NCAA Big 10 Conference Predictions

Rutgers will be returning 18 starting players and none of these are defenders, where the team has the most strength. Side by side four-year starters Isaiah Wharton and Blessuam Austin will be on the field, which is a positive thing for Rutgers as they chance high standings in the Big 10 Conference. As for quarterbacks, the team has quite a few options, including a senior, sophomore and three freshmen. With a new offensive coordinator, Rutgers has a chance of doing well this year.

Rutgers will be facing a difficult November as the team is slated to play against leading teams like Wisconsin, Penn State, and Michigan. Unfortunately, the team has struggled over the past few years at the beginning of the season, but with some great new recruits, this may be the year Rutgers causes an upset and wins these key games.

Season Predictions

This year, head coach Chris Ash will enjoy more talent on the squad and he had the goal of a bowl game. Many are predicting a 6-6 season ahead, and this is largely due to those mentioned games at the end of the season. To make it to the bowl games and postseason, Rutgers will have to focus on winning six of the first eight games that are played so they can allow a possible loss in November against stronger teams.

The thing that will be a key decision during the season is whether the offensive coordinator will play the seasoned senior quarterback or if he will go with one of the rising freshmen. The running game should be a solid one and with the return of three huge offensive line starters, there should be some overall improvement over last year’s record. The defensive end will be what will carry Rutgers to the postseason and this year shows one of the most promising rosters in the past few years.

To make it to the bowl game, Rutgers will have to come out strong against the first eight teams they face. Three of these teams lost 10 or more games last year, so it should not be difficult to get these wins. However, the closing five games of the season is what will present problems, especially if injuries occur. In the end, the success of the team will ultimately come down to quarterback selection and performance as well as offensive improvements.
